Kid’s Virtual Summer Camp

By July 1, 2020Uncategorized

Dreams do come true, if you don’t give up.

For many, many years, I have dreamed of putting together a team of teachers, who I could talk with, study with, create a plan with, and then go out in the world and see what good we could accomplish together. After 9 long years, my “dream team” is finally here!  Beginning July 27, 2020 we are coming together to support students from all across the globe by putting on a virtual summer camp for kids.

This camp will:

  • develop stronger readers, writers, and mathematicians
  • provide a space for kids who need a little more social-emotional support during these trying times
  • give kids a chance to connect and develop more empathy for others
  • offer parents tips on how to support their children in a virtual learning format

The educators who are a part of my “dream team” have all had a huge impact on my teaching in one way or another. They have modeled difficult lessons, helped me read between the lines, showed me that teaching and learning go hand and hand, or opened up their doors and allowed me to teach beside them. I have the utmost respect for every one of these instructors and I can’t wait for “Teaching One Moore Summer Camp for Kids” to begin. Here are just a few of the reasons why I hold these people in such high regard and the virtual summer camp courses they will be leading.

Erin Donelson

Erin Donelson is tenacious. She raises the level of positivity, perseverance, and performance in all of her colleagues by modeling an authentic desire to learn more everyday. She constantly pushes herself to create new pathways for connecting with students and helping them develop into powerful readers and writers, no matter the circumstances. Her love of learning is contagious.

Rasheka Henry

If you want your child to enjoy going to school as well as successfully understanding all of their grade level standards, then you want to be in Ms. Henry’s class. There is no place for mediocrity in her classroom. She brings a passion for teaching into her daily practice and her students love her for it. She is well-read, highly-skilled, and constantly challenges herself and those around her to be their very best. Without the support, influence, and open door policy of Ms. Henry, I would not be where I am today.

Renee Houser

In 2007, Renee Houser stepped off a plane from New York City, walked onto my school’s campus, and changed the entire staff for the better. As a staff developer for the Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, she demonstrated for the staff the art of teaching writing.  From Renee, we learned that real teaching is about being reflective, responsive, authentic, and having the ability to listen carefully. She forever changed the way that I and thousands of others teach as a co-founder of Growing Educators and now through her work with Read. Write. Think. with Renee.

Jodi Manby

Jodi is deep. Everyone who works with her knows she goes for depth, not breadth. The first time I saw her teach my jaw dropped. I had never seen anyone teach quite like she does. I had to put my pencil down because I couldn’t concentrate on her magical form of teaching and take notes at the same time. She opened up my eyes to what real teaching is; it is not a script, or a procedure, and it’s definitely not a pacing plan. Teaching is understanding mathematics and literacy at its highest levels and giving those around you the tools to reach those levels. Jodi helps teachers and students reach heights they didn’t previously know existed.

Jamaica Ross

I cannot make enough positive statements about Jamaica Ross as an educator or as a human being. She brings out the best in all of those around her both personally and professionally. Through her thoughtful selection of diverse texts, topics, and questions she continues to show her students that they have found a safe place for learning. Her students know that their voices are heard, their thoughts will be valued, and their feelings respected. Every child should have the opportunity to experience a teacher like Jamaica and least once in their lives.

Danielle Moore

When I was given a teacher’s guide and told to follow directions with fidelity, I knew there had to be more to teaching than this. For over 20 years, I have been on a mission to develop my knowledge and increase my skills as an educator because I believe that all students should have access to an excellent education.  I want to be a part of the generation of teachers who helped others recognize that teaching is so much more powerful, effective, and joyful when we get out of the habit of turning the pages of a textbook and lean more into listening and responding to what students REALLY need.
